Pack 345 is made up of scouts in kindergarten through 5th grade. The Cub Scout year follows the school year — over the summer we have activities, but no formal meetings.
The dens
A den is a group of three to eight scouts who are all in the same grade. Each den has one or
two parent den leaders.

After 5th grade, scouts cross over into a Scouts BSA troop or another scouting program such as
Venturing. We hold a crossing-over ceremony every year to mark it.
Who meets when
Den meetings
Once or twice a month during the school year, usually on a weeknight at the home of one of
its members — or a park, a library, wherever suits. Dens work on the requirements to earn
their rank badges. Parents stay for the whole meeting, and we try to
include them in the fun.
Pack meetings
Roughly monthly, and deliberately not always in the same room. This year they’re at
Parkside Square, the Sea Scout Base, Ocean Beach and the Elks Lodge — Friday evenings at 6,
or Saturday mornings at 9:30. We award badges, run a theme, and invite guests to lead

Weekend activities
Day hikes, three campouts and a couple of service Saturdays — roughly one a month across the year. See the calendar.
Pack Committee meetings
Quarterly. Pack leaders and any interested parent meet to discuss upcoming events, activities, fundraisers and anything else that needs deciding. Everyone is welcome.
Who’s who
Akela
The name for a parent, guardian, teacher or leader — any adult role model. (In The Jungle Book, Akela leads the pack.) Every scout participates with theirs.
Cubmaster
Leads the entire pack, runs the program, keeps everyone on track, and is the pack’s primary representative.
Den leader
Plans the den’s monthly meetings and coordinates the den’s part in the pack meeting. Always a parent volunteer.
Pack Committee
Supervises the pack and handles the administrative work. Chaired by the Pack Committee Chair.
Chartered organization
The organization that sponsors the pack. Ours is the SF Scout Skill Academy.
How we communicate
We use ScoutBook to email pack parents. Mail goes to the address you used to create your
my.scouting.org account, and we put [Pack 345] in the subject line so it’s
easy to spot. Add every parent in your household who should be getting pack email.
Check your spam folder for the first week
Hotmail and AOL in particular are convinced we’re junk mail.
The pack year
Our year runs from summer to summer and coordinates with the school calendar. We publish the
whole thing in advance, so you can see exactly what you’d be signing up for before you
sign up for any of it.
