The honest answers to the things parents actually want to know.
Do we have to do all of the events?
Definitely not. We organize a few events a month, and we'd love your scout at whichever ones interest you and fit your schedule. Can't make a hike one month? No problem. Missing a camping trip for a sports obligation or a family trip? No problem. Ultimately it will be whatever you and your scout choose to make of it.
What grades can join?
Kindergarten through 5th grade, boys and girls. Join at any grade, any point in the year, with no previous experience — for the kid or the parent. After 5th grade they move up to a Scouts BSA troop.
Do I have to stay at the meetings?
Yes. Every scout takes part alongside an "Akela" — a parent, guardian or other caring adult. Parents stay for the whole den meeting.
How much time does this take?
One den meeting a month, usually a weeknight at a member's house. One pack meeting, and one or two weekend activities. Volunteer leaders spend a few more hours on top of that.
Is Pack 345 a religious pack?
No. We're not affiliated with any religion and never discuss religious topics at meetings — that's a conversation for families to have at home. Scouts of every faith, and of none, are equally welcome.
What does it cost, really?
Two payments: $242 to Scouting America for BSA and council registration, paid when you apply, and $145 in Pack 345 dues for 2026–27, covering badges, awards, supplies and insurance. Plus a one-time uniform purchase. If cost is a barrier, tell us; scholarships exist and those conversations are confidential.
Where do you meet?
All over the city. This year: Parkside Square, the Sea Scout Base, Ocean Beach and the Elks Lodge, with campouts at Chabot, Camp Tamarancho and the Santa Cruz Mountains. Dens meet separately at a member's home, a park or a library.
I volunteered to be a leader. What now?
A short onboarding: an adult application, Youth Protection Training, and California's AB506 requirements including LiveScan fingerprinting. The pack reimburses both costs, and role training is free and online.
