Why Cub Scouts?

Camping, hiking, archery, whittling, pinewood derby cars, service projects and a lot of songs with questionable melodies.

The program is full of excitement and fun. But underlying all of the fun and action are the goals of building self-esteem and confidence.

What the program is

A family-centered, year-round program for kindergarten through fifth grade. It builds character, citizenship and fitness through things kids actually want to do: camping, games, swimming, archery, field trips, nature, and racing pinewood derby cars.

Scouts join at any grade. No previous experience required — and no scouting parent either.

What your kid gets out of it

Confidence

Recognition from adults who aren’t their parents, for skills they earned.

Belonging

A den of three to eight kids their own age, and a pack of forty who know their name.

Family time

Time spent doing something together.

Social skills

Talking to rangers, police officers, firefighters, and each other.

Ethics

The Scout Oath and Law, in language a seven-year-old can use.

Leadership

Running part of a pack meeting; teaching a younger scout to tie something.

The Cub Scout motto

Do your best.

Not “be the best” — do your best. It sets the standard for how advancement works: a parent signs off on a requirement when they and their child agree the child has done it, rather than against an external benchmark.

On my honor, I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.

The Scout Law

A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent.

Cub-age children are old enough to understand a promise and what it carries. They may need your help when they feel unable — or unwilling — to live up to it.
